How I work

I think it's important for current and potential future colleagues to get the chance to know who they're sitting down and create with. I found that writing down my work principles and how to communicate with me effectively can help set us up for a great (first) conversation and mutual understanding when working together.

My work principles

My work principles

When working, my biggest drive comes from structure, ambition, and vision. I work well with individuals and teams that are structured and love to plan ahead for the future. Having that vision and working hard towards a shared goal with purpose and intent, while playing just as hard!

Some of my key features:

  • Attention to detail

  • Adaptability

  • Keen on getting sh#t done!

Systems mindset

My expertise lies in design systems. I love to curate proven solutions and experiences that product teams make for their users. The thought that went into the details and the overall experience often deserve a place in a design system and getting to pass that on to the rest of the organisation is what I strive to do on a daily basis.

Having been around design systems for a while now, I've started looking at things in my life as systems. I find that thinking in systems and processes will often help me find where improvements can be made.

While I generally like colouring in between the lines, I make sure to make plenty of room for exploration and creating innovative experiences both in life and in work so that I'll never be stuck in my ways.

Processes and structure

I'm a sucker for structure. I enjoy doing things the way they were intended and documented to be done. I can however adapt quickly in situations where an alternative route needs to be followed, always keeping in mind to document such situations to make sure we all learn from them for future reference.

Geek out

I love to work with people that consume and share their thoughts about design systems and our design work field in general. Design is constantly evolving, whether it be in the AI space or Brad Frost calling for a Global Design System. I love to hear your thoughts and share mine with you so that we can learn from each other. Going to conferences or hang out and watch the Config livestream discussing new updates for Figma. You name it, I'm probably down for it!

Transparency and honesty

I strongly believe that a transparent and honest working environment is where I find the most joy and growth. I would like for you, as my colleague to feel encouraged and comfortable to give me constructive feedback and learn from what I do well, and where I might fall short. And vice versa! I'm an open book. I grew up not always being able to express who I really was or what I felt, and I would like to make sure that everyone I work with feels accepted and knows what they can expect from me.

I've had the pleasure of getting to know Joshua when I worked at team.blue with him. We started out as colleagues but ended up being close friends. Not only is he a great person, he is truly good at what he does. The user is always on Joshua's mind, his personality radiates energy and enthusiasm for things he cares about. I've had the opportunity to learn to see design through his eyes and I could recommend that to anybody. From time to time I'll ask myself: "What would Josh think of this?" and that's second best to asking him.

Things that I don't appreciate:

Working with me - Dont's

Things that I don't appreciate:

  • Rushing me into quick decisions

  • Showing me 'how it's done' in an unnuanced and belittling way

  • Forcing me or intimidate me into getting something done

  • Raising your voice at me or getting angry with me

  • Holding on to the past way of working and never look to improve or innovate

Joshua is a very talented and witty designer. His drive, knowledge and passion are remarkable. With his communication skills, he can bring any idea come to life and help teams develop the perfect solution for complex projects. He is always down to help and mentor people, share knowledge and keeps pushing his own learning curve. Without Joshua and his design system knowledge, I would not have been the designer I am today. Very pleased to work with Joshua, a true addition to any team!

More about me

More about me

  • While I can come across as a social butterfly at times, I'm pretty introverted when I'm around a large group of people and might find it difficult to connect with people that don't share the same interests as I do. I prefer a one-on-one or small team setting and having real and genuine conversations with people over chit-chat about the weather. While working together, I much prefer cutting to the chase and not sugarcoating anything to make sure we work collectively to understand each other.

  • I often need time to process what happened in a meeting or when we're collectively working on an issue. I will most likely get back to you as soon as I can with a well thought out and formulated answer. Therefore it will not be beneficial for either of us to rush me into coming up with something on the spot as I would feel that my answer would be lacking substance or be incomplete.

  • I'm often around (online or offline at the office) when help is needed. I respond to messages as quick as I can so that I can make sure you know that I've acknowledged you if you need something from me. This helps me as I could often quickly forget to respond and this way I know I'm on top of things. I'm thankful for the people who try to do more or less the same for me, however I'm well aware of the fact that a healthy work-life balance includes turning off notifications sometimes to make sure you don't burn out :-).

  • I like to celebrate as a team when we deliver something great and I want to make sure we all learn from the things we could've done better.

  • I want to make sure that what we commit to, gets done. When we run the risk of not making our deadlines, I will always be inclined to offer help out where I can. Even when it's not expected of me. I want us all to win! On the flip-side I might struggle asking for help when I need it. This is something I'm actively working on and I appreciate you checking in with me sometimes.

  • Sitting still for longer periods of time is difficult for me. I appreciate small breaks and taking the time to make sure we can stay focussed when it's crunch time!

  • I enjoy sharing memes and blurting out the occasional pun. Prepare your 'badum-tsssss' when i'm around.
